Telepak Networks Selects PineApp Mail-SeCure Anti Spam Appliance From RADirect to Filter Spam for Thousands of Users

Mahwah, N.J. (PRWeb) December 13, 2006 -- Telepak Networks, a large Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Jackson, Mississippi, has selected and deployed PineApp's Mail-SeCure anti spam appliance to filter spam for its thousands of business and residential users.

Since deploying a trio of PineApp Mail-SeCure 5080 anti spam appliances, each of which can support up to 10,000 users, Telepak has learned that more than 97% of their approximately four million daily incoming emails were spam.

Taking a multi-layered approach, PineApp's anti spam appliance employs an email spam filter based on 11 detection engines resulting in a detection ratio of more than 98% and a false-positives rate of less than 1%. Central to these 11 engines is the IP Reputation feature which, based on a variety of statistical analyses and flow control policies, provides the ability to ascertain the validity of the sender and determine whether the address is a known spammer or known safe sender in real-time. This extra level of protection has resulted in a traffic reduction of more than 50% for Telepak.

Telepak's previous spam filtering solution consisted of an assortment of freeware solutions capable of handling the more simplistic types of unsolicited e-mail. However, as the attacks became more complex, and email volume grew exponentially, the administrative time required for updates and patches far outweighed the perceived cost savings of a home-grown anti-spam system. It also proved inadequate performance-wise, becoming quickly overwhelmed during spam surges and frequently mis-identifying "good" emails as spam.

Faced with the challenge of finding a better solution that was capable of handling the large e-mail volume of an ISP at a cost-correct price, system administrator Joseph McNealy evaluated a host of competitors, including Barracuda and McAfee, before selecting the Mail-SeCure anti spam appliance from PineApp partner RADirect. Says McNealy, "One competitor wanted $90,000 for the same functionality, and that was before we factored in the additional $4,000 - $5,000 per unit for yearly updates. RADirect's solution came in at about half of that."

RADirect president Uri Zilberman explains, "It reached the point where Telepak's commercial clients frequently waited for intolerable periods of time for important emails to get through the clutter - a situation that seriously jeopardized Telepak's ability to conduct business in an efficient manner. As such, they realized the need to address the severity of spam in terms of both its overall affect on users as well as the affect on network traffic."

Steve Curry, PineApp's vice president of channel sales in North America, cites alarmingly increasing levels of spam in predicting an upsurge in the number of organizations taking similar steps towards comprehensive spam filtering. "Estimates show that spam now comprises more than 75% of business emails. At the same time, spammers are becoming more and more sophisticated, constantly finding new ways to bypass spam controls. The old conventional methods of fighting spam are simply no longer sufficient."
