SpamButcher Launches Free Anti-Spam Blacklist Tool

Seattle, WA (PRWeb) January 23, 2007 -- SpamButcher has released a free tool, "Anti-Spam Blacklist Thing" to help email server administrators understand the risks and benefits of using various anti-spam blacklists.

"Anti-Spam Blacklist Thing" and other free spam fighting tools from SpamButcher are available for download from http://www.spambutcher.com/tools.html

Anti-spam blacklists are lists of networks or IP addresses suspected of being involved with sending spam. They are also known as DNS blacklists, DNS blocklists, DNSBLs or blackhole lists.

Email server administrators commonly configure their servers to reject messages from IP addresses listed on one or more blacklist to help minimize spam.

Overtime, the number of active anti-spam blacklists has grown to well over one hundred. Deciding which, if any blacklists an email server should use when rejecting messages can be tricky.

Server administrators need to make configuration choices that both block a significant portion of spam, while still not posing substantial risk to wanted email messages.

"Anti-Spam Blacklist Thing" is a Windows application that can quickly test if an IP address is listed on any of up to 20 different anti-spam blacklists.

By evaluating email server log files and message headers, administrators can create lists of servers that have either recently sent them spam or delivered legitimate email.

Using "Anti-Spam Blacklist Thing" they can then evaluate which blacklists would have filtered the spam messages, and which would have accidentally blocked wanted email.

The tool ships preconfigured with many popular blacklists. However, it can easily be reconfigured to query any blacklist desired.

"Anti-Spam Blacklist Thing" is provided by SpamButcher for use completely free of charge. It is not a demo or time limited trial.

SpamButcher's own anti-spam filter does not use any DNS-based blacklists, and does not specifically endorse using any blacklist for any given purpose.
